Forestry Tasmania Media release
February 7th, 2006
Maydena Hauler
Managing Director Evan Rolley said today that the Maydena Hauler project represented Forestry Tasmania’s fourth major commitment to Tasmanian tourism in the last five years.
“The Tahune AirWalk and Dismal Swamp tourism projects have proven to be very successful in engaging visitors with our forests in new and innovative ways. The Scottsdale Forest Eco Centre combines cutting-edge ecodesign with the functionality required for a tourism information centre.”
“We believe the Maydena Hauler will offer another unique forestry experience, this time harnessing the forested landscapes of the Derwent Valley and surrounds.”
Mr Rolley said constructing the Hauler would present significant engineering and construction challenges.
‘The design, engineering and construction teams we have assembled are totally committed to working carefully in the landscape to produce a visitor experience that is not available anywhere else.”
“The ‘rooftop of Tasmania’ is an apt descriptor of the experience visitors will have and the development will work well with Mount Field National Park which is close by.”
“Eighty-percent of the landscape visible from the ‘rooftop’ is protected for conservation values with other small areas forming part of the sustainable timber supply for our hardwood processing sector.”
“Through the Maydena Hauler project, visitors will see how sustainable timber production and tourism can work together to deliver many benefits to the state.”
